How can Hypnotherapy help you & how does it work?
Hypnotherapy is a complementary therapy that uses the power of positive suggestions to bring about changes to our thoughts, feelings and the way you behave. Most of all hypnosis is a very effective treatment for stress, anxiety, phobias and helping you kick out those bad habits and so much more.
In simple terms I talk to you whilst you are in a relaxed state.Your hypnosis begins with you sitting on a chair and I speak to you to help you to relax. It is very simple, you close your eyes and listen to me speak. As I talk to you gently, you will begin to relax as you listen to my voice. And when you are very relaxed you will be in what is called a ‘hypnotic trance’ and it is harmless, it’s rather like drowsing before you fall asleep at night.
Your conscious and subconscious mind
When you are so relaxed your conscious mind is also in a very relaxed state, sort of switched off so to speak; so this allows me to speak to the sub-conscious part of your mind. Because your subconscious mind has access to lots of information,it is this part that lets you solve problems, construct sentences or locate your keys. Your subconscious mind puts together plans and ideas and runs them by your conscious mind. And when a new idea comes to you out of the blue, it’s because you have already thought through the process unconsciously.The subconscious part of your mind takes care of all the stuff you do daily without even thinking. For example: you don’t think through every little thing you do while driving a car do you? a lot of the small stuff is thought out in your subconscious mind.
Hence it is to this part of your mind that I direct the positive suggestions, so as to bring about changes in your thoughts and the way you feel. This then affects the way you behave, because you no longer think or feel the way you used to.For example if you want to stop smoking I might suggest to your subconscious mind that smoking will cause nausea. So when this association is programmed effectively, you will feel sick every time you think about smoking a cigarette. Alternatively, I may build up your willpower, suggesting to your subconscious that you don’t need cigarettes, and you don’t want them.
What the difference between Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy?
The difference between hypnosis and hypnotherapy is that hypnosis is a procedure. Hypnosis is used to bring about a trance-like state of mind. Most of all you are still in complete control of your own thoughts and actions, so it is a harmless relaxed state of mind. There is a lot of evidence to prove how effective hypnotherapy is. As an example NICE (National institute for Health & Care Excellence) recognise the benefits of hypnotherapy for the treatment of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome).
